CEPPL Conference

Tuesday 13th - Thursday 15th April 2010

The Ceppl held its `transforming learners, transforming lives` conference at the University of Plymouth from the 13th to 15th April. Nearly 90 delegates attended from a diverse range of disciplines including veterinary science, business, information technology, health, social care, and medicine. The truly interdisciplinary nature of the event was a real highlight and resulted in engaging, interesting and constructive discussions across professional boundaries.

Two keynote speakers presented thought-provoking talks which stimulated considerable debate. Professor Dann May, from Oklahoma City University, delivered a talk on `An American experience of service-learning: how to engage student learning, increase retention, serve the community and improve faculty job satisfaction`. On the second day, Professor Dan Goodley, Professor of Psychology and Disability Studies, Manchester Metropolitan University, presented a fascinating talk on `Depsychologising disability: understanding the disabled child`.

The cheese and wine poster session was well attended and delegates really enjoyed the conference dinner held at the National Marine Aquarium. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with many delegates expressing a desire to remain in touch with newly formed friends and colleagues, and sadness that the Ceppl will cease at the end of the funding period. Some example comments are:

"Thank you so much for this great opportunity to disseminate the outcomes of our project work and to meet and have interesting discussions with some lovely people who are clearly leaders in their field. BEST CONFERENCE IN YEARS!"

"This was an interesting and well organised conference in which I was able to network with people who had similar professional interests"

"This was a highly valuable conference for me - I met useful contacts for the future and was able to meet with the CEPPL team, who have been so supportive throughout the project (I am an Innovation Fund holder)."

The conference was centred on six themes:

  • Transforming learners, transforming lives
  • Rethinking interprofessional education
  • Technology enhancing learning on placement
  • Preparing and supporting students
  • Assessment for learning? Assessment for practice?
  • Sustaining impact: ensuring the future of our learners
