Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)

This Development Activity has now been completed.

This development activity is exploring existing knowledge about objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) It aims to advance that knowledge to enhance both student learning and clinical practice.

OSCEs need to be evaluated thoroughly as an assessment process. While this is fairly readily achieved at a programme level, we are hoping to conduct evaluation across a number of programmes. To this end we are developing generic evaluation forms which can be analysed to reveal the overarching impact of OSCE on a faculty, or suite of programmes. We hope by adopting this approach to produce systematic research on the OSCE as an assessment tool.

It is important to us to gather the perspectives of students and stake-holders (such as clinical staff) in order to identify whether this form of assessment makes a difference to the student`s subsequent clinical practice, and if so, what that difference is. We are also developing resources for example DVDs and web-based materials for students to provide insight into the OSCE process which will assist them in their preparation for this type of examination.

Staff wishing to undertake OSCEs with their students require appropriate resources to run these complex examinations effectively and efficiently. Our team is exploring the development of resources to ensure that students and staff gain maximum benefit.

As we develop our expertise and knowledge we are sharing this with others, including students, faculty staff and colleagues nationally. We are using OSCEs across many programmes within our Faculty and have already gathered a great deal of knowledge. We are excited about what is happening and would like to hear from anyone who has similar experiences to ours.
